Charles County Circuit Court Role
The Maryland Circuit Courts are the state's general-jurisdiction trial courts. In Charles County, the Circuit Court sits in La Plata and works with the Clerk of the Circuit Court for records, filings, certified copies, jury functions, licensing, and docket support. The Circuit Court is the primary trial court for felony criminal cases, major civil disputes, divorce and family matters, juvenile matters, jury trials, appeals from the District Court and some agencies, and other matters that require general jurisdiction.

Charles County Circuit vs District vs Orphans
A Charles County court records search works best when the record is routed to the right court level at the start. Circuit Court and District Court both appear in Maryland Case Search, but they do not hold the same case types. Charles County Circuit Case Flow
Criminal and civil cases move differently, but both create docket entries as filings, notices, hearings, orders, and dispositions occur. Circuit Court criminal matters may begin after arrest, citation, statement of charges, information, or indictment depending on the case. District Court may handle an initial or preliminary stage before a felony or jury-trial level matter reaches Circuit Court. Appeals from District Court can also move into Circuit Court.

Charles County Circuit Divisions
Civil Circuit Court records can include complaints, answers, motions, orders, judgments, liens, garnishments, appeals, and docket sheets. Criminal Circuit Court records can include charging documents, indictments, informations, motions, plea entries, trial events, sentencing, probation conditions, restitution, and final dispositions. Family records can include divorce, custody, support, domestic matters, name changes, guardianship-related family issues, and related orders.
Some records are public only in part. Juvenile matters, adoption records, mental health proceedings, sealed filings, expunged records, shielded records, financial identifiers, minors' information, and protected addresses may be restricted. The public docket can show that a case exists without displaying every document. Certified copies, official documents, and older files should be requested from the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
Charles County Courthouse Visits
The Circuit Court courthouse is in the La Plata government and court center area. Official directions in the research point visitors from Baltimore via I-97, U.S. 50 West, and Route 301 South to Charles Street / Route 6. From Annapolis and points east, the route uses U.S. 50 West to Route 301 South. From the south, visitors use U.S. Route 301 north into Maryland and turn onto Charles Street / Route 6.
Free parking is listed behind the courthouse, with county visitor guidance pointing to Talbot Street for direct parking-lot access. Visitors are subject to security screening at entry. Prohibited items include pocket knives, razor blades or sharp bladed objects, chemical sprays, impact and keychain-style weapons, multipurpose tools, scissors, handcuffs and keys, alcohol, illegal drugs, narcotics, and paraphernalia. Security will not safeguard prohibited items.
Electronic devices may be possessed in courtrooms only if secured on a belt clip, in a pocket, briefcase, or pocketbook. Devices must remain off and inoperable unless the presiding judge permits use. Bluetooth earpieces are prohibited in courtrooms, and photos are prohibited in the courthouse unless specifically permitted.
Charles County Specialty Court Context
Charles County official pages identify two current Circuit Court specialty courts: Adult Drug Court and Family Recovery Court. The Maryland Judiciary Office of Problem-Solving Courts coordinator directory lists the Charles County Circuit Adult Drug Court / Family Recovery Court coordinator at the Circuit Court address. These programs are court-supervised treatment dockets, not separate record search systems, but they may create Circuit Court docket entries, orders, hearings, and completion events in eligible cases.
